Classic: Candelaria
Huehuetenango, Guatemala
Variety: Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon
Processing: Washed
Origin: Huehuetenango, Guatemala
Producers: Genaro & Juan Vasquez
Altitude: 1500-2000m
The Huehuetenango region of Guatemala consistently produces mind-blowing coffees thanks to the history and local tradition of caring for the land and producing crops with attention to quality over quantity. The various microclimates in Huehuetenango also allow for vastly different flavors to develop at farms in different parts of the region given their unique soil and growing conditions. This means every coffee we taste from Huehuetenango has the potential to be a new adventure, and the Vasquez brothers' Candelaria surprised us with its savory flavors. We typically see bright, fruit-forward, acidic coffees from Huehue and really like the change of flavor that this coffee supplies while still living up to the region's reputation for superior quality.
Candelaria's flavor profile is rooted in a sticky-sweet plum note and filled out by heavier notes of chocolate and caramel, making it the perfect candidate for our Classic series. These flavors mix together so smoothly and create a low-key, savory taste without becoming too muted at any point. It's not something we were expecting from a washed coffee out of Huehuetenango, but we're certainly happy we found it and even happier that we get to share it with the club. I am not a fan of light roasted coffee, so would have preferred the beans to be more roasted. That said, this coffee does have caramel and chocolate notes, which I far prefer over coffees that have citrus flavors.

Well, you have found another winner here! This coffee just works with every which way to make. I especially enjoy it made in Lattee fashion. Cold brew works well also! Pour over is my next favorite after my Lattee. Just cannot stop drinking this one! ENJOY!

I received a gift membership to the coffee club for Christmas. This was my first shipment, and I like it a lot! It's not highly aromatic, but it's remarkably smooth.

I tend to brew with a french press and have found that lighter roasts tend to not fare well with it. I did brew this coffee using my single cup drip, going heavy on the beans and using a finer grind (which does not work well with the french press) and found that the favors were more pronounced that using my press. That said I do tend to favour stronger coffee.

This hit the spot -- exactly as advertised. I could taste and enjoy the plum notes without it being too fruity, which I have slight preference against. Love chocolate/caramel flavors. Only complaint is it was a touch light, I found myself grinding a pinch extra to get the strength I like.

The plum notes are very forward. I found the other flavor notes a little harder to pinpoint but got lots of different results with varying brewing methods. Never bitter but always nice and robust, a real showcase of what the Classic series coffees can be.

Easy to drink, smooth and tasty. Maybe a little light for me but perhaps that's my drip coffee maker. Couldn't say I picked up on the plum, I didn't find it terribly fruity.

I use this in my espresso machine and make lattes with it. The candelaria is great, having a rich flavor, mellowed out by my foam. Also delicious as a cup of Americano!

Smooth & rich. I enjoy this coffee so much, I actually sit down with it as a morning ritual instead of drinking it on the run, and I'm satisfied after one cup. It's easy on my body and my stomach, no coffee crash.
