'Gaturiri' is a Kikuyu word that means "the shrubs" - which became the name of an area in Kenya characterized by many shrubs used for medicinal purposes. Now that the Barichu Farmers Coop has built a coffee washing station in Gaturiri - the name could also apply to the coffee plants (often called shrubs) that produced this delicious coffee! Small-holder farmers from the Gaturiri area bring their SL28 and SL34 cherries to the station for processing, where they are hand-sorted into different quality grades before pulping, washing, and drying on raised African beds. This lot of beans is an AB grade - which is the second-largest standard size for Kenyan coffees.

Flavor-wise, we're loving how zesty and tangy this coffee is with tart notes of grapefruit leading things off. Kenya is famous for its washed coffees, and this cup doesn't disappoint with a clear, bright, and sweet profile. We picked up on some molasses-like flavors that give a smooth sweetness to offset the grapefruit acidity making for a coffee that's balanced and effortlessly drinkable. Kenyan coffees are renowned for their history and their quality - but above all - for their flavor, and we think the flavors here are next-level. Give it a brew, and let us know what you think!

Excellent Roast

A nose of molasses and citrus is borne out in the flavor of this good brew. Complementing this subtly sweet molasses backbone is a muted grapefruit tang. Well-rounded: roastiness, sweetness, tang. A very good coffee, but again (as with prior weeks), a bit subtle. To fully appreciate the complexity of flavors, I'd recommend tossing in an additional scoop of beans above and beyond what you'd normally brew.
