Julio Cesar Montenegro is a larger producer for the Nariño region, with a total of 5 hectares planted in coffee across three farms in the Chachagui municipality. (Most producers in Narino have relatively small plantings compared to other coffee-producing areas the club gets coffee from). Julio grows Colombia, Castillo and Caturra varieties, and he is careful to pick only ripe cherries for processing. Julio dries his coffee on raised beds, giving better ventilation than what is common in Nariño's standard parabolic drying structures. This is a washed coffee, but Julio is also working on some naturals using his raised beds, and we're excited to see how those come along!

This lot produces a cup with a lot of sweetness and delicate flavors - we're picking up some floral notes and a hint of strawberry. As a washed coffee, the overall profile is pretty clean and structured which makes for a very drinkable, very dependable cup. We're loving this one every time we brew it up, and we think you'll feel the same way!

I wasn't certain

It tasted not so great at first. As my coffee cooled down, I thought it tasted wonderful. I think the taste seemed temperature dependent, or it just grew on me. I couldn't decide.

Different aspects of coffee stand out at different temps - so that could totally be part of it! How are you brewing at home?

I use an Aeropress. I use 185 deg F water, stir for ~20 seconds, and then press. Then add some more water.

Another delicious Colombian coffee from Moustache. A beautifully rounded coffee, very clean, hard to break apart for analysis. For me, that's a sign of great coffee.

Very fruity

I liked the fruit forward taste. Very smooth and light. I use a pour over Kalita wave.
