Grape, Lemon, Vanilla

Item information

Kanzu Lot 19

Item information

Description

Variety: French Mission Bourbon

Processing: Washed

Crop Year: 2017

Origin: Nyamasheke, Rwanda

Producers: Karambi Small-holders

Altitude: 1800-2100m

The coffee cherries in Kanzu Lot 19 are grown in the hills above the Kanzu washing station, where cooler temperatures slow down the development process. This makes the coffee cherries more dense and packed with flavor, which comes to the forefront with the help of the Kanzu washing station's rigorous preparation process. Kanzu Lot 19 is a coffee with a great balance of sweetness, spice, and acidity. A full-bodied grape note pairs well with a tart lemon flavor. These two tastes are highlighted by a touch of vanilla that softens the profile overall and gives it a smooth finish. Kanzu Lot 19 is a really inviting cup of coffee, and that's coming from us, the people that drink a ton of coffee.

Complex and well-balanced

Not too sweet, not too acidic, but with a bite. Nice rich undertones. Not my favorite, but a winner nonetheless.

Christmas Present

Coffee is smooth and not too acidic with a hint of lemon. I enjoyed the flavor very much and would recommend it.

Nice Balance

Bright, distinctive. Ethiopian coffees are usually my favorites, but this one is right up there.

Too Quick to Judge

I was in Rwanda 5 years ago and was excited to receive Kanzu Lot 19. The first brew in a French press was a disappointment - I gave it a "Meh"at best. Maybe the distinct profile and lemon threw me off a bit. Then 2 things happened. I decided to keep drinking it and I added more ground coffee and extraction time. Six cups later, I like this variety. Taste is a funny thing. Sometimes large differences lead to disagreement. Take a little time to get to know and appreciate this unique coffee.

I like this one a lot

I normally find African coffee's too bright. This one is really mellow though.

Rally good but fruity

Really good, but a little too fruity for my taste. Quality coffee though!

Somewhat subtle in scent and initial taste, but the finish is incredibly rich. Impressive!

Perfect for Aeropress

First brew was with a chemex which produced an excellent cup of coffee, but it didn't stand out until I brewed a cup using an Aeropress. The depth of flavor was incredible and the mouth feel was super velvety. As much as I like coffee, it's rare to find a coffee that tastes as good as it smells and this one does. I'm going to go back and play around with my pour over process but see below for the Aeropress parameters I used. Inverted Aeropress 20g coffee ground just on the fine side of medium 40g of 195-200 degree water to bloom for 30 seconds (I stir the bloom) Add 210g water stir and press Total time about 2 1/2 minutes

High Quality Coffee

I think that the coffee is fantastic. Pure to the taste. This one was a little acidic and fruity for me, but for those of you that like that I would definitely suggest. I'm just into the chocolate/nutty notes for my coffee preference.

Loved it

This coffee was exquisite, exactly my taste. I'm not normally a daily coffee drinker (more of an every-other-day type of person), but I demolished this in a week. Made it on an Aeropress every time, and everything, the smell, the flavor, was perfect. Every time I put milk in it/made it bulletproof was a mistake because it tastes so good black. So happy to not have greasy coffee beans!

Good first shipment

Bright, multi-layered, smooth. Had trouble adjusting grind level for single-serving pour-over--had to go coarser than default setting.

As someone else said: give it time.

My first brew (in a Behmor Brazen Plus) was good, but not spectacular, as I could not pick out the notes of lemon, etc. I reduced the ratio of coffee:water (I had too much coffee in the first brew) and reduced the presoak from 1:15 to 1:00, and subsequent brews have been excellent with the slight sour note I was wanting and expecting.

Solid

Has that acidic/sour quench of richness that gives it a little weight and viscosity(?) I generally prefer naturally processed to washed coffees but this makes for a nice change up.

Interesting!

Could taste the lemon, but not too acidic. The lemon was not my favorite addition, but interesting and fun to try!

Grew on me

To me, this is a bold flavored cup of coffee. At first i wasn’t sure but, after a few days, I really liked the intense flavors.

Kanzu

This coffee was good and flavorful. I just prefer a little darker and stronger coffee. Very good, just not over the top (to me) as other flavors.
