Huila, Colombia

Description

Variety: Castillo, Caturra

Processing: Washed

Origin: Huila, Colombia

Producers: Maria Damaris Medina

Altitude: 1836M

These tasty Caturra and Castillo beans were grown by Maria Damaris Medina on her farm Finca Santa Elena, which is located in the Pital municipality of Huila Department, Colombia. Huila is famous in the specialty coffee world not only for its high-quality coffees - but because of its near-constant production. The geography and weather in the area mean that coffee grows extremely well regardless of season, leading to almost year-round harvests. It's a fairly wet place so farmers face some challenges drying their coffees, but Ms. Medina utilizes parabolic drying beds to ensure that her coffees dry slowly and evenly.

This lot from Finca Santa Elena presents a lovely profile that's heavy on sweetness and smoothness. We're tasting flavors similar to an old-timey soda fountain: notes of cola, brown sugar, and vanilla. This is a coffee that's easy to like and even easier to drink, a perfect coffee to share with some friends. Enjoy!

Smooth and tasty!

The bag smells almost exactly like a bag of brown sugar would and the brewed coffee has a very strong smoothness to it. It's like taking a shower in soft water and that feeling of not knowing for sure if you got all the shampoo out... but on your tongue. It is a crazy feeling but not unwelcome. Very easy to drink black but not hindered by cream and/or sugar if that's your thing. This is the first Columbian coffee that I've really, really enjoyed.

Loving this description - very apt! Glad you enjoyed this lot - we may or may not have a few more lots from Santa Elena joining the rotation soon... stay tuned! :)

Subtle and Nuanced

A subtle coffee, reminiscent of tea, with a silky smoothness and sweetness (mild milk chocolate) overlaying a soft earthiness and minerality. This one doesn't hit you over the head but gently raps on your shoulder until you pay attention. Easy drinking.

Good coffee

The coffee is good, but I don't taste brown sugar and vanilla. I can get a mild soda flavor. Just not as flavorful as past coffees.
