Item information

Brunca, Costa Rica

Description

Variety: Venecia

Processing: Honey

Origin: Brunca, Costa Rica

Producers: Dagoberto Trejos

Altitude: 1400m

This lot of Venecia beans was grown in the Brunca region of Costa Rica, and honey processed to bring out more of its naturally sweet flavors. Brunca isn't as well-known in the specialty coffee scene as other regions in Costa Rica, but farmers there like Dagoberto Trejos are working hard to make a splash with every crop. Venecia beans are a relative of the Bourbon varietal and can be difficult to grow due to their susceptibility to leaf rust, but they have great flavor qualities and do well on Dagoberto's La Flor de Roble farm. We got excited when we saw that they were honey processed, and we think Dagoberto's really on to something with this fun lot.

La Flor de Roble has a very unique mix of tastes at play in its flavor profile - starting off with a traditional Costa Rican citrus note; here reminiscent of tangerines. Cool lavender florals are also present, which gives the cup a smooth character and tempers the acidity of the citrus taste. These beans also present a note of green tea that gives this cup a mellow, almost earthy quality that grounds the profile and draws the flavors together. You don't often see honey processed Venecia, but if word gets around about Dagoberto's excellent lots from Brunca, you're certainly bound to see more. Enjoy!

Not for me. Prefer a darker roast.

the coffee that turned me on to moustache!

I had this at a girlfriend's house and signed up the same day. It's nice to enjoy the floral and citrus notes without high acidity. A unique and interesting brew.

I wanted to like this coffee

I am trying not to automatically 4 stars every bag of coffee and instead write an honest review of my novice skills. So here goes......The coffee had a slight sweet scent with a very light brown toast. If you use a french press I would allow it to steep for at least 6 minutes and grind it medium. I think this coffee might have been better served if it was roasted darker and dripped. I think its notes did not come out due to it lighter roast. I did get the note of green tea and maybe a slightly nutty flavor, with a slight honey aftertaste. It just was not the coffee for me. I still have some of this roast, how did the rest of you brew this coffee, maybe it's just not a french press type coffee?? -On to the next bag!! Let me know!

Very good

I really like this one. It has a mellow earthiness and maybe a little less acidity than some of the other selections.

Chris Kennedy

I really like this coffee; I usually go for the lighter roasts in the morning and dark roasts in the afternoon. This is one I will definitely enjoy in the morning.

Extraordinary and distinctive

Well balanced with floral body and some citrus notes. Extremely accurate tasting notes in the accompanying description. Used French press.

One of my favorites from Moustache.

Very excited about using the rest of this bag in various brewing methods. Was able to get a very fruity, tart cup, with a good amount of depth and a pleasant darkness to it. Feels like quite a complex flavor which will reward tinkering.

Something special!

Do you know that distinct flavor that all "coffee-flavored" food items have? This is exactly that to me but done right and without any funky artificial flavors. I mean that as a high point of praise because this is exactly what I imagine when daydreaming about coffee. You could put this in front of anyone and they would enjoy it because it isn't trying to be something that it's not. This is a well rounded, easy-drinking, and an immensely pleasurable cup of coffee.

Great coffee, with divergent tasting notes

No discernable lavender, nectarine, or green tea for me. So this isn't what I was expecting. However...what I did find, I liked - a rich undertone of chocolate with a subtle, low-acid, citrus high note. No bitterness. Lovely light caramelization. Not overly complex and does not demand your attention. An eminently drinkable coffee.

La Flor De Roble

I enjoyed this coffee, especially the light 'tea' note at the finish. If you enjoy lighter roasts, you'll find plenty of good ones from Moustache.
